Otthon was established in 1894 by Christopher Rennie. The name is the Hungarian word for "home," a fitting choice for a settlement built by Hungarian newcomers.
The first settlers were led by Rev. Janos Kovacs of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Pennsylvania. The community drew Hungarian miners who had been working in Pennsylvania, as well as immigrants who came directly from Hungary.
A post office opened in Otthon in 1898. It closed briefly between 1898 and 1899, then stayed open until December 31, 1968. Today Otthon is an unincorporated community along Highway 10.
